Late Msgr. CJ Varkey was born on 11th June 1921, the feast day of St. Barnabas the Apostle, as the seventh child of Joseph and Annamma at Kuzhikullam House of Veranal family in the parish of Paingulam of the diocese of Pala. He was baptised six days later on 17th June in his parish church and given the name Varkey. After completing his middle school from Pala St. Thomas English School, following his childhood desire to become a missionary, he joined seminary in the Latin diocese of Calicut. His seminary days were full of suffering with recurring physical sicknesses and also the painful loss of his dear mother, but God’s grace and mercy raised him to the altar as an ordained priest on March 16, 1947. Fr.C.J Varkey began his ministry as the assistant of Rev. Fr. Joseph Kuthur at Peravoor parish. Whose ministry was until then centred around Edoor was transferred to Mananthvady in 1949.When the Diocese of Thalasseri was established in 1953, at the appeal of Bishop Sebastian Valloppilly he joined the diocese.
